Conservation & Management Plans

We undertake conservation and management plans for a wide variety of projects and clients e.g. Graveyard Conservation & Management Plans for local community groups, historical societies, local authorities etc.

A thorough desktop survey is carried out and a number of field visits to the study site are normally required. Field inspection enables us to quantify the archaeological and cultural heritage resource both within a specified study area and its close environs. All the relevant statutory lists and archives are consulted as a matter of course.

We also review relevant publications, local historical journals, folklore files and cartographic sources. In terms of mapping, the reports normally included a range of different maps from mid-seventeenth century to modern mapping. We source good quality mapping in order that it is of the highest quality for report annotation and reproduction.

In addition to recording the known archaeology, the field inspection also details previously unrecorded monuments and features of interest. The fieldwork outlines the nature, location and extent of each monument. We also seek local knowledge for additional information and also to clarify any queries we may have.

Our report also details a site specific archaeological and historical background of the study area incorporating other aspects of cultural heritage, detailed cartographic analysis and a review of the cultural heritage sections of the relevant county development plan.

Legal status and protective measures of recorded and unrecorded monuments are also discussed in terms of National and European Law. The legislation covered includes archaeological and cultural heritage sites, monuments and features.

The report focuses on a conservation plan which is given in detail regarding care and maintenance of the designated study area and any of the individual features within. In conclusion to our reports, we outline ‘Objectives and Key Actions’ which recommend phases of proposed works that a local community, local authority etc can undertake to improve and maintain the study area over a realistic time frame.
