The results of archaeological testing or monitoring can sometimes uncover sub-surface archaeological deposits or features. This can give rise to an excavation whereby the archaeology is preserved by record as all features are dug out by hand and a written and photographic record is kept of each deposit, layer and cut-feature.
Excavations are usually termed ‘research’ or ‘rescue’. Research excavations are usually carried out through universities and provide the first experience of field archaeology to many students. Rescue archaeology is normally generated through commercial activities (e.g. road schemes, pipelines, housing developments) when full archaeological excavation is required in order for the scheme to proceed.
Alison McQueen & Associates provides a full excavation service from initial identification to final resolution and report writing. A strategy is agreed prior to commencement of the excavation in order for work to proceed as efficiently as possible and be completed in a timely manner. This maximises both time and labour and delivers the best possible service to the client without compromising the archaeological heritage. |
